Assassin's Creed Syndicate [year]

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate 2025

August 18, 2017 Richard Gomez 0

If familiarity bred contempt, we'd be thoroughly sick of the numerous Assassin's Creed games over the years. Counting the various spin-offs, there are now over 20 games in the series. Despite this, Assassin's Creed Syndicate – the latest entry in the series – proves that there's still life left in Ubisoft's take on the open-world stealth genre.
The game puts you in the roles of Jacob and Evie Frye, twin assassins who are eager to reclaim London from the grip of the Templar Order. Similar to the first game in the series, you're not a rank outsider on the road to being an assassin, rather you already are one. This allows for a different narrative approach in comparison to the most popular games in the series, such as Assassin's Creed 2, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. Without spoiling much, developer Ubisoft Quebec has managed to weave a tale that manages to keep you interested from start to finish.
This is partially down to the fantastic set..

Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae Impressions: No Fun, No Fantasy

Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae Impressions: No Fun, No Fantasy

February 15, 2016 Richard Gomez 0

Final Fantasy XV (FFXV) is a game that's been nearly a decade in the making, and we spent a little time with the demo – Episode Duscae – trying it out ourselves. The game looks great, and steeped in detail. Does the rest of the demo hold up, or does FFXV favour style over substance?
The Final Fantasy series of role-playing games (RPGs) has been around since 1987. It's seen 14 games (including two massively multiplayer online RPGs) and several spin-off games. And while that might sound like a lot for newcomers to the series to digest, it's important to note that barring certain themes and elements, each game in the mainline series features a completely different set of characters, storyline, and setting. You don't need to know the events of previous entries to be able to make sense of the story of the game you're playing.
This makes the series a less daunting prospect for many an RPG neophyte. Meanwhile, old timers who play FFXV will know that it started life ..

Mortal Kombat X 2025

February 17, 2016 Richard Gomez 0

Mortal Kombat is a series that needs no introduction. It's been around since the early 90s as a competitor to the incredibly popular Street Fighter games, except gorier and much more bizarre. Quirkily designed characters, over the top storytelling, and gruesome finishing moves known as fatalities – all of the franchise's trademark pillars – make a return in Mortal Kombat X. It's the tenth instalment of the series and it's on PlayStation 4 (PS4), PC, and Xbox One.
The game is running on a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 – the same technology that powered many last-generation console and PC games – but despite the old engine, Mortal Kombat X looks fantastic. Developer NetherRealm Studios appears to have eked out every last bit possible from Unreal Engine 3 to realise its vision of a strange world teeming with possibilities. From the many withering corpses to small details like spikes of ice, Mortal Kombat X is gorgeous game, especially in motion.

Dying Light Review 2025

February 13, 2016 Richard Gomez 0

It's the zombie apocalypse. And instead of being in the safe confines of a bomb shelter, we're at a video store in search for a movie for a mentally challenged man. In a huge dollop of irony, the film we're looking for is none other than Charly.
If perusing through a dimly-lit, abandoned video store wasn't a thrill in itself, leaving the front door ajar turns out to be the perfect invitation to be attacked by zombies.
Shambling in, a molotov cocktail made short work of them, charring their flesh, giving us enough time to traipse over a few of them as we made our exit. Only to find our gibs splattered over the pavement.
Evidently that hissing sound we heard a few seconds ago was from the oxygen tank on a zombie in a hazmat suit. It created a chain reaction leading us to respawn and try again.
Welcome to the wonderfully bizarre world of Dying Light. You're Kyle Crane, an operative charged with eliminating a local political figure in the city of Harran that&#..

Fable Legends Shows You Don't Have to Kill to be a Hero

Fable Legends Shows You Don’t Have to Kill to be a Hero

In most video games, support heroes – the ones that keep the others alive to do the actual fighting – are usually side characters that are usually ignored. Team Fortress 2 is one of the few games where the support characters are a treat to play.
NDTV Gadgets chanced upon Fable Legends on the Xbox One at Gamescom 2015, at Microsoft's showcase and think this action driven take on the RPG series might stand out in this regard as well.

Fable Legends features four heroes versus one villain. The heroes have to face waves of enemies and traps set by the villain. All the main characters are playable through online multiplayer, but you can also play alone with AI partners.
In our preview session we were thrown into the role of Celeste, one of the support classes in Fable Legends, along with two other human players and a third person playing the role of the villain.
Our mission took place in a forest, where we foun..

Anno 2205 Preview: Sci-Fi SimCity or Something More?

Anno 2205 Preview: Sci-Fi SimCity or Something More?

November 16, 2017 Richard Gomez 0

When you think of city-building, SimCity comes to mind. But while it's not as high profile, the Anno series has also been doing just that since the late 90s. The latest entry in the series, Anno 2205, has a lot in common with its predecessor, Anno 2070. It shares the same forward looking sci-fi trappings as Anno 2070, while previous games were based on historical settings.
Despite the almost 200 year gap between the setting of both games, Anno 2205 appears similar to its predecessor. This isn't much of a problem since it looks futuristic, shiny and pleasant on the eyes. From buildings that wouldn't look out of place in Star Wars to flying cars, there's a lot to wonder over. It's a game that's steeped in detail, making it fun to watch.

Playing Anno 2205 though is an entirely different thing. Like most city builders you'll go through the motions of constructing apartments for your workers, harv..

Undertale [year] Review

Undertale 2025 Review

April 9, 2016 Richard Gomez 0

For a game developed by a single person, Undertale is as contradictory as they come. It uses rudimentary graphics that wouldn't be out of place in the 8-bit era of consoles yet it manages to display emotion far better than most photorealistic AAA titles. There's an emphasis on non-violence but you'll frequently find yourself in combat. And with all the critical acclaim it has garnered, you'd assume it's a game anyone would enjoy, but it's not really for everyone.
The consistency, or lack thereof, is in part due to its overarching narrative. The game is set amidst a backdrop that has monsters living beneath the earth after losing a war to mankind, and you play as a human child who falls into the ruins and ventures deeper underground with the purpose of getting home.
Along the way you'll pet dogs, hear bad puns from skeletons, and play matchmaker to lovestruck guards. You can, of course, resort to the usual slaughter of everyone and everything in you..

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection Review - Familiarity Breeds Contempt

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection Review – Familiarity Breeds Contempt

December 16, 2017 Richard Gomez 0

For many people, the Uncharted series was the deciding factor that led to their purchase of a PlayStation 3 (PS3), and who could blame them? Out of Sony's entire roster of exclusives – ranging from shooters like Resistance and Killzone to more artistic fare like LittleBigPlanet – the Indiana Jones-like exploits of Nathan Drake resonated most with a generation of gamers who wanted more than the brutal action of God of War, or the super heroic trappings of Infamous.
Even after three increasingly bombastic games on the PS3, and a solid portable outing (Uncharted: Golden Abyss) on the PS Vita, it's hard not to think of Nathan Drake as video games' everyman – a relatable average guy with no superpowers, who finds himself in a host of unlikely situations involving the occult, abominable snowmen, and at times, hanging from the end of a train bogey that's about to fall off a cliff.

Battlefield Hardline [year]

Battlefield Hardline 2025

February 15, 2016 Richard Gomez 0

Before music transformed itself into a streaming, digital entertainment behemoth, there were simpler conventions that aficionados stuck to. One such term was the B-side. Most artists would stack the A-side – the one you would hear when you first put in the record – with all the tracks they consider strong contenders to be hits. The B-side referred to the second section of the record, one that usually contained tracks least likely to be appreciated by the masses.
What does this have to do with Battlefield Hardline? Surprisingly, a lot. The Battlefield series of first-person shooters (FPS) has been under the purview of Sweden-based developer, DICE for most part. The studio has been responsible for a string of hits in the franchise such as Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield 4. All of these were set in modern or near future war scenarios and combined fantastic gunplay, exotic locales – and in Bad Company's case, dark humour -to make for compelling gameplay.

XCOM 2 Review 2025

February 21, 2016 Richard Gomez 0

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is one of the best games in the strategy genre and it's easy to see why. The game had a stellar user interface that would give Jony Ive an inferiority complex, a tough but fair set of game rules, and an addictive flow of events that would have you playing till the wee hours of the morning. Is XCOM 2 a worthy successor?
XCOM 2 takes place 20 years after the events of the first game. The world has surrendered to its alien invaders and XCOM – a clandestine group responsible for the planet's last line of defence – is no more. This has resulted in a dystopian rule quashing any semblance of dissent. However, a force is being amassed to rebel against Earth's extra-terrestrial leaders.

It is an interesting premise, and developer Firaxis has injected enough of a story to keep you invested in the proceedings. The story is neatly meshed with several gameplay elements. Much like the last ..
